The difference between Brand and Branding

The definition of ‘brand’ is well known as something along the lines of:

Your brand is what others say about you when you’re not in the room.

By that definition, it’s quite obvious to me that brand is something that mainly lives in other people’s heads.

Whereas branding is something that we do to create a strong brand.

My definition of branding is:

Talk and write about what you stand for based on who you are and what you care about.

It is important to understand the distinction between the two because the latter gives us the power to do what we must do – talk and write about what we stand for.

I’m so passionate about this that I wrote a book on the subject if you didn’t know. :)

That book is called How Do You Want to be SEEN. Have you already bought a copy? Thank you. For those with a book, download the accompanying PDF (Invitations to Play) and work through it to start your branding. Now, if you haven’t bought a copy, I encourage you to do so. Your time is now to make a difference with your brand for those people you seek to serve.
