How do you feel about becoming visible?
This initial question might have made some of you feel a little queasy.
You know what? Becoming visible is a scary prospect for a lot of people so you’re not alone.
I’m here to share some of the ideas which helped my clients.
Let me start with a little definition. Despite how you feel about your personal brand, (by the way, you’re a brand whether you like it or not) establishing a personal brand is not about changing who you are.
Your brand is about doing the work that is worthy of being seen and heard. It’s not so much about you but rather about the work you do.
Then you might ask, should my work speak for itself? Well, it shouldn’t. Why should it? By the way, how has that idea of your work speaking for itself been working out for you?
We are living in the era of Human to Human(H2H) business NOT B2B (Business to Business) and not B2C (Business to Consumers). It’s H2H. In other words, you put yourself forward with work that is worthy of remark.
That’s all fine, right? But then what’s this mumbo jumbo about being visible?
Becoming more visible means you WALK & TALK your brand, you share your ideas, you LOOK your brand, but nowhere in that process would I advise you to reveal anything about yourself. Revealing something for the sake of, or in the name of, authenticity has nothing to do with establishing a personal brand.
Ultimately, it’s your choice. And you can choose not to reveal your insecurities, fears and shortcomings if you don’t want to. Revealing oneself is not a prerequisite for becoming visible.
You can be braver than that by showing up for what you believe in and what you stand for.
To be honest with you, it’s more about being a professional – being focused, consistent and keeping promises by being consistent with your brand message for the people you seek to serve.
Does it sound like something you could do?
Of course!
Can everyone do it? You bet!
Is it easy to do? Of course NOT.
