When I first launched my business, I thought it was all about my craft and only about how well I could sell my services. I insisted on sending out brochures, handing out business cards and all the while hiding behind the camera. If you look at my stuff a couple of years ago you wouldn’t find my face anywhere.
The good ol’ saying “My work should speak for itself” was what I really believed in. People may have known my name and my blog (Style Discovery circa 2008) but I was not really visible for many years. Even when I was doing some selfies (way before it became THE thing people do) during those early blogging days I never enjoyed that aspect of it so I dropped it entirely.
I hated the thought of becoming visible. I worked, I developed my techniques, I got better with my craft but as I stopped showing up in public I got forgotten.
Then I got to learn what it means to be a professional. I’ve done loads of reading, learning, especially with the help of Seth Godin and his coaches from Seth’s courses.
The biggest learning which hit me like a ton of bricks was this: It is not about ME.
It is about the people I seek to serve.
The women that I need to help.
The women who are so afraid that they don’t look good in photos.
For those women, my work exists.
When I got to really understand how my personal values (knowledge, learning and leadership) play a role in my life I was able to show up with the energy I currently have.
If you’re resisting the idea of showing up, if your project that you put heart and soul into isn’t going anywhere, this is the time to realise it is not about you. It’s about the people you seek to serve.
P.S. If you feel that it is about time you showed up connect with me via replying to this message. Let me help you bring you out into this world so that others can enjoy your gift.
